Stressed But Blessed

Stressed but Blessed

John Lennon’s “So This Is Christmas” states…So this is Christmas, and what have you done, another year over, and a new one just begun…

Can you even begin to comprehend that this year is close to the end? Christmas time is here again and I still haven’t recovered from last Christmas…luckily some of my decorations were still out…so I didn’t have to put them out again! So much to do and so little time…Rush! Rush! Rush! Run from this store to that store, this party to that party, order presents, food, attend church, wrap presents – oh wait and all your work, family, church and community obligations that are always there! Exercise…ha! I get my exercise doing all this running around! Dieting…ha! I am not eating lunch most days…well I do snack on treats, cookies, casseroles and such because you can’t hurt anyone’s feelings so you have to partake! Why are the holidays so maddening? I think we create this world and we believe we have to attend all events, eat all the snacks, have the perfectly decorated house and cook, clean and have it all! We need to be the mom that makes the cute things from Pinterest, that has every room…laundry room and bathroom included, decorated; and we attend all the musicals, plays, visit all the decorations and lights in the area; and attend church of course! We must be the perfect mom and create the perfect Christmas experience! Do you feel the stress?

StopDropRollSTOP, Drop & ROLL!!!

OK STOP right now! DROP to your knees and just start thanking God for all you have…a great family, church, job, friends, community, and life. Yes – we all have certain issues but we all are blessed. Stop worrying and focusing on how stressed you are, but relax and pray and thank God for how blessed you are! Take a big deep breath, start seeing the positives instead of focusing on the negatives; start having fun and just let go and let God! Instead of planning all these great things to do – just jump in and have fun too! I am really writing this for myself today – you see I feel stressed and it is easy to think about sick family, messy house, overweight, unhealthy self, all the things I need to be doing but am too tired; and I need to see the Lord and focus on him and the things I am so very blessed with! ROLL up your sleeves and do something for others. Don’t stress or overthink it – just be kind, smile, listen…sometimes that is all people need.

I pray that you will focus on all that is good in your life and that you will thank God for it all! I pray that you will remember when you are so stressed….you are also so blessed!

Make a Difference…Like a Mustard Seed

I have always loved the parables of Jesus and found it interesting that he chose to teach us through his stories and examples. I can visually see that little mustard seed. So small and really just looks so insignificant – sometimes how I feel – small and insignificant… Jesus wanted us to visualize this and to personally relate – he was just cool like that!

mustardseed

Can’t you just see those little seeds being flung everywhere and falling into cracks, into weeds and even a few making it to good rich soil? Just like us being flung into this world, not knowing what to do or who to turn to…we make mistakes – we let the weeds smother us – ok well not weeds – but sin, whether it is lying, boasting, cheating, judging, – you know those things we do constantly but don’t realize it is really a sin… Then there are times when we get so excited for God and we are just on fire and we let ourselves get burned out – just like the scorched seed – we need to remember to have good soil, water, and sunshine to grow – a Christian needs accountability, prayer, Bible and worship – we need to be covered with good soil – and good Christian supporters. I want to be that good mustard see that lands in the right “soil” with the right amount of light, water and nourishment. I want to be that Christian who just grows every day for God. Jesus later stated in another parable, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches.” — Matthew 13:31–32, World English Bible
Interestingly enough…Jesus’ parable was discussed in three of the Gospels in the Bible. The differences between Gospels of Matthew (13:31–32), Mark (4:30–32), and Luke (13:18–19), are minor. Jesus could have used any seed or any tree to describe his thought; however he chose the smallest seed and described what a difference it could make by becoming a large beautiful tree that could even be a home for a bird.
In life – we feel small and insignificant but God can do so much with so little. We just need to open our hearts and let him work through us. Think of ways you can make a difference and start today! You never know if you are encouraging a new leader, saving someone’s life, inspiring a missionary to teach others…it only starts with a little seed…make a difference.

The Parable of the Sower (NIV) Matthew 13:1-23
1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.” 10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” 11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. 14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “‘you will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. 15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ 16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it. 18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 when anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Focus – The next step

Image

The next step of my journey is a very important one.  FOCUS!  When I think about the word focus – I think about going to the eye doctor and they are always checking…better one or better two.  They make things out of focus so that we can then see clearly.  I think God does that too sometimes.  I think he lets us get out of focus – off course so that when we get back on the right path or back focused on him – it is so much better.  I love Hebrews 12: 1-3.

Hebrews 12:1-3   The Message (MSG) Discipline in a Long-Distance Race

12 1-3 Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!

In this health journey that I have been going on and on and on…I have learned lessons, got off and on track, made friends, learned new things I liked, felt stronger in my faith than ever and have grown.  I wish that I would not grow in physique but in my relationship with God!  I struggle, I get depressed, anxious and just fed up with myself.  I am a strong woman and I have been very successful in my life – why is this something that I can’t beat? Why can’t I get healthy, lose weight, not worry, and just be happy?? I think FOCUS has alot to do with it.  I FOCUS on eating and I eat good; I focus on exercise and I do fine; I focus on faith and I praise God; I focus on friends and I have fun…It is the balance of all those things and how I let myself get so unbalanced that makes me lose my focus.  I start doing things my way and think my plans are so much better than God’s.  I am so very wrong!  God has plans for me and he will give me hope and a future!  I need to let go and let God!  I need to fix my eyes on Jesus and look no where else for answers!

Image

I have found that blogging, journaling, writing notes and cards help release some of my thoughts.  It is important for you to take time to renew your mind, clear your thoughts, become peaceful, meditate, relax…Find your happy spot, your relaxation and resting place.  I love a great hot soaking bubble bath, reading, and just clearing my mind.  I love the smells of eucalyptus and mints….soft songs playing.  I also like a good ice cream bowl sometimes…not good for you but sometimes that is my happy spot….Renew your mind, refresh your soul and redefine your FOCUS towards God.Image

Fitness – Step 3

Image

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)  19 You should know that your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit that you received from God and that lives in you. You don’t own yourselves. 20 God paid a very high price to make you his. So honor God with your body.

I have been procrastinating to write this blog.  This is the hardest blog for me – to write about Fitness.  I know what to do, I know where to go, I have the best trainer in the world, I have fun when I work out – so what is the problem?  Most of the time I just make excuses – I don’t have time; I am too tired; and I just DIDN’T DO IT!

Image

I start occasionally and then run out of steam.  Why can’t I just keep going?  I have found things that I enjoy…I like yoga – there is something about stretching and relaxing and focusing just on me that I enjoy.  I like riding the stationary bike…it helps loosen up my bad knees and gets my heart pumping.  I can read, look at email and just exercise – it is good cardio for me!  I am so surprised that I like lifting weights and body pump.  I am not that good but I feel comfortable and am actually proud of myself when I really try.  I enjoy having a trainer that guides me, motivates me and kicks me in the butt!  I need it.  I don’t know why I can’t get back to working out…why do I find so many excuses..

.Image

I want exercise to be important to me!  I want to get excited to work out!  Please help me figure out a way!  I am going to pray about getting back to the gym and get back in shape.  There are some great resources at The Daniel Plan website…here is an excerpt from Sean Foy.  I want to be Daniel Strong…

10 STEPS TO BECOME DANIEL STRONG

By Sean Foy, MA
Daniel Plan Health and Fitness Coach

Daniel Strong = “A pursuit of excellence in body, mind, and spirit for God’s glory.”

We all want to be healthy, fit and happy…but it can be challenging to achieve with our hectic lives. Follow these ten steps from Daniel Plan Fitness Coach Sean Foy to help you become Daniel Strong and make a fitness plan that will work for you. Here are Sean’s tips to help you start and stick with your fitness plan:

1. You can do it!!     The first step in reaching your health and fitness goals of an active, physically fit, Daniel Strong lifestyle, is to begin by believing that you can change. Forget about yesterday – no matter what your previous experiences or attempts to change your fitness habits in the past have been….today is a new day and with God’s help and strength you can do it – one day at a time!

2. Take Fitness Baby Steps One of the best ways to “ease” back into a regular fitness program is to “start small”. Set small realistic goals allowing you the opportunity to “fit” exercise into your daily schedule-as well as increasing your confidence as you accomplish small measurable goals.

3. Select exercises you enjoyI get asked all the time, “What is the best exercise to help me lose weight, get in shape or improve my health? And my answer is always the same –  “The best exercise to help you get fit and stay fit is THE ONE YOU WILL DO!” In other words, choose activities you enjoy – not exercises you find to be boring or drudgery.  Begin with exercises or movements which bring a smile to your face. Whatever brings joy to your heart and soul, you are much more apt to continue.

4. Get in touch with your “fitness personality”… Ask yourself: Do I like to exercise outside, inside, on machines, with others or by myself? Do I like to do other activities when exercising such as reading, praying, worshiping, watching TV, and listening to music? Do I prefer exercising at home or at a gym? Do I like to compete when I exercise (e.g. playing a sport or training for an event)? By asking yourself these questions, you’ll get a better sense of what your “fitness personality” is all about.

5. Forgive!! Be aware of statements that produce self-blame, shame or guilt. “Oh, there you go again missed another exercise session!!” or “You will never change!” Typically, self-blame can spiral into a demoralizing way of thinking that can sabotage even your best efforts. If you miss an exercise session or were inactive for a short period of time, which will happen, don’t beat yourself up! Simply assess your lifestyle at the time and plan to get back into your new Daniel Strong active lifestyle. Maintaining an active healthy lifestyle requires patience, persistence and most importantly forgiveness.

You don’t have to be perfect to be physically fit and Daniel Strong!

6. Take Charge!!“Responsibility can be defined as the ability to choose your response”. Individuals who begin and maintain a Daniel Strong lifestyle recognize their ability and the freedom to choose their response in any situation. But remember, taking personal responsibility for your health and fitness does not imply that you have to do it alone. In fact, taking responsibility for your health and fitness should encourage you to proactively build a support team of good friends around you to encourage, assist and support you along your journey.

7. Plan your exercise before your week beginsGood exercise habits happen because we make them happen. Take a few minutes before your week begins and plan out your week. Schedule “non-negotiable” appointments with yourself – jotting down on your phone or calendar the exact day and time you are committing to move your body. Soon enough, your regular exercise program will be something you cherish, protect and look forward to!

8.  Increase your training slowlyTo help your body become Daniel Strong, slowly and incrementally begin to increase your training by 5-10% every week or every other week, based upon how you are feeling. Progression of your exercise routine is the key to getting into Daniel Strong shape. There are a number of ways to progress your workout such as:

  • Changing the number of repetitions
  • Increasing the duration of exercise
  • Increase the speed of exercise
  • Increase the number of exercises performed
  • Increase the number of sets performed
  • Increase the intensity of exercise-increase the elevation, RPM’s revolutions per minute.
  • Changing equipment or apparatus
  • Decreasing your rest interval
  • Change your position
  • Going from bilateral to unilateral –training one arm or leg at a time vs. both at the same time
  • Add a balance factor-when exercising such as using a ball, BOSU or foam roller.

9. Track your progress Use a small notebook or your mobile device to keep track of your exercise duration, number of exercises, sets, repetitions and weight completed. Also, make note of how you feel before during and after your activities or workouts. If you want to simplify your tracking, check off the day you completed your exercise-and give yourself a pat on the back!

10. Fitness and Friends: Get a workout buddy who is at your level! Getting back into shape and becoming Daniel Strong is always easier with a friend who is at a similar or higher fitness level to you. Enlist the help of friends, family members (even your dog) who you know will be consistent and faithful to exercise with you….this will help you progress together as well as encourage you and keep you accountable.

It doesn’t matter where you begin – what matters is taking that first step and discovering the exercise you enjoy. Start small and make it a regular part of your life.  Just remember to take it one step at a time and win today!    God bless, Coach Sean”

I am going to read these words and go back to the gym this week.  It is all about getting off the couch and getting going.  A first step is better than no steps…I want to do it!  I can do it with God’s help and would love your support.

Blessings!

Leigh

Food – Step Two

Aside

Danielplanplate

I may seem like an expert on eating healthy and I feel like one –  I have read, studied, prayed, and ate right.  Why is this one of the hardest things to stick with?  I LOVE eating all these foods and when tempted with other things – I am strong!  My issue –  I don’t always have the right things at the right time to eat.  Sometimes my schedule doesn’t allow time to go to the grocery store or the farmer’s market.  Sometimes I am just too tired to cook, clean or prepare food.  Sometimes I just need to eat and pasta is easy, canned food – easy, frozen dinner – easy…this is my issue.  Sometimes having all these wonderful fresh foods costs lots of money, must be eaten quickly and the rest of my family don’t know how to prepare!  Eating healthier takes time to buy the right things, prepare them, and to plan better.  I love having a fabulous colorful plate that beams with color, vitamins and minerals and just taste like perfection!  I need to plan my month, stick to my plan and journal my every bite.  I like to track on MyFitnessPal App.  I have used Fitday.com as well.

I am going to take my inspiration as shown in the Bible.  In Daniel Chapter 1 verses 8-15, Daniel chose to eat his way and not the Kings’.  He stood firm on eating for God.  He could have eaten all those lavish royal feasts, but he chose to eat simple, fresh food.  Daniel Chapter 1  –But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your[c] food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”  11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” 14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.  15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.

The Daniel Plan focuses on the core food groups of healthy carbs, healthy fats, healthy protein, healing spices, drinks, and super foods. And The Daniel Plan gives an easy guideline to use for any meal:

  • 50 percent non-starchy veggies  (Eat more! You don’t often hear that when you are trying to lose weight and get healthier, but non-starchy vegetables are one food group where you can satisfy your appetite.Vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and look great on your plate—and with so few calories and carbohydrate, everyone can enjoy more!)
  • 25 percent healthy animal or vegetable proteins   Proteins should be approx. 30 – 35 % calories, no more, as you need to balance it with good amounts of vegetables, fruit and healthy fats. Eat only about a palm-sized portion. Protein increases your metabolism. Protein is necessary for muscle repair and growth, it is the building blocks of all the proteins in our bodies, including, skin, bones, enzymes and bloods cells. Without adequate protein, you lose muscle tissue. Increasing lean protein and decreasing refined carbohydrates improves blood sugar, cholesterol and decreases high blood pressure.
  • 25 percent healthy starch or whole grains – Make sure to carefully choose WHOLE GRAINS!  This can be confusing but look for the whole grain stamp.  Eat Gluten free – this is an easy way to ensure that any grains you are eating are whole grain.  Do NOT eat processed grains.  From the website…http://wholegrainscouncil.org/  Whole grains contain all three parts of the kernel. Refining normally removes the bran and the germ, leaving only the endosperm. Without the bran and germ, about 25% of a grain’s protein is lost, along with at least seventeen key nutrients. Processors add back some vitamins and minerals to enrich refined grains, so refined products still contribute valuable nutrients. However, whole grains are healthier, providing more protein, more fiber and many important vitamins and minerals.
  • Side of low-glycemic fruit –  OK so I am no expert and have to look all these things up – but it is easy – just google, read, ask and you will find the answers:  Berries, cherries, peaches, plums, rhubarb, pears, and apples are optimal fruits; melons, grapes, and kiwifruit are suitable but contain more sugar. Organic frozen berries (from Cascadian Farms) can be used if you make protein shakes. (This is a good way to get your protein in the morning.)
  • Drink—water or herbal ice teas (Hot or Cold)  Drink at least 8 – 8 oz. each day.  I like to drink bottled water so they are typically twice that size so I drink one before I get to work, one before lunch, one after lunch, one before bedtime.  I drink water during meals too so that ensures that I get my minimum needed daily.  I don’t drink anything else.
  • Snacks: Seeds, Nuts (Not peanuts), Beef or Turkey Jerky, Fat Free Yogurt occasionally,
  • From “The Daniel Plan – 40 Days to a Healthier You.”  By Rick Warren, Daniel Amen, and Mark Hymen.

Get started, stick to it, stay focused, share recipes with friends, have accountability members – kids, spouse, mom, friends; be creative, Plan your work – work your plan!

Pray for me as I pray for you…

Many blessings and healthy eating!

FAITH – Step One

Image

Matthew 17:20

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. “

God doesn’t ask for much from us…faith as small as a mustard seed…Jesus loves people that had faith – think back to the woman whose daughter was demon possessed and she just wanted to talk to Jesus and the disciples tried to keep her away – Jesus saw her faith and the daughter was healed. What about the friends that lowered their paralyzed friend to see Jesus – Jesus loved their faith.  Jesus loves us when we have faith.

Why do we always try to solve our problems on our own?  We have someone so much bigger and better, stronger and all knowing and we need to lay down our issues to our God!  I lay awake at night thinking about things I would do better next time, how I would save more money, eat healthier – I have all these regrets and wishes that I would have done.  If we just give our problems to God and pray to him and let him resolve everything – he will do what is best.  I admit that I don’t always understand why things happen the way that they do sometimes – you know seeing a friend die, a child suffer through cancer, your teen’s heart break or getting laid off or numerous of other bad things.  I get frustrated with God sometimes because I think I know what is best and I don’t have enough faith that he is doing what is best!  I need to have more faith!  So how can you get more faith?  How can I increase my faith?  I want too…

Image
I just need to talk to God and believe his way is the right way. I need to read my instruction book over and over so that I really understand it – by the way – I am talking about the BIBLE!  I need to study, learn, pray and just worship God in all that I do.  I want to set an example to others and want to be a servant leader like Jesus.  I know you have heard so many people talk about paying it forward and I really believe in that philosophy and I also think it just comes back to you so much better.  God wants us to do for others and he will in turn do so much for us!  If you are searching for a stronger faith – go to church, reach out to a friend, start a small group, read the Bible, just pray, surround yourself without positive faithful people.  Just do something and trust in God!  He’s got your back – always and forever!

The Daniel Plan Connection

Image

The Daniel Plan by Rick Warren has been my inspiration recently!  I needed to start taking care of myself and doing a better job of eating right, exercising and focusing on God.  That is why I chose the Daniel Plan…the five elements include FAITH, FOOD, FITNESS, FOCUS, FRIENDS…and I add one – FUN!  My plans were to be perfect over the 40 days we know as LENT…I would eat, exercise, study Bible, pray, and be a completely different person. I started off really strong – I could tell I was losing weight but I got so hung up on how much I was losing that I decided to stop weighing.  I have done a little more exercise than I was but not nearly enough to make a difference.  I have studied Daniel and have read the Daniel Plan and feel really stronger in my faith and I feel that I have inspired others.  I am still not where I wanted to be at the end of the 40 days but I am a lot better than where I was.  I am discouraged but I am also proud.  I have started a Facebook page called the Daniel Plan Connection and I know that our group is supporting each other.  People talk to me about healthy eating and exercise which is kind of funny but they know that I am passionate about it!  I really think this is my ministry.  I know that one of my strengths is inspiring and encouraging others so I feel that my interest in being healthier can be a way to reach out to others!  I just wish I was doing a better job setting an example.  My life is so busy and I don’t make the time for exercise.  I think that I am eating so much healthier and love my food.  I rarely cheat and am really not interested in any bad foods.  I am happy that I am studying Daniel and am really enjoying different Biblical studies, movies, etc.

So I need to get some inspiration about exercising – any thoughts? I have tons of friends that have invited me to come join them; I have the best trainer in the world and have a great time when I work with her – just don’t tell her…and I like lifting weights and being at the gym.  I just can’t seem to find the time.  I have a teenager and have to take her lots of places and I have a new job, but I still should find some time…I don’t.  Why is it?  I have started praying about having time and taking advantage of my spare time to take care of myself.  I am going to start doing more things at home – that is better than nothing.  I need some inspiration….so that I can have some perspiration!

3 John 1:2 ESV  Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.

Eat, Drink and be Merry and Get Healthy

Image

I love food – every kind!  You could say it is my hobby…I eat when I am happy, stressed, mad, for enjoyment, well,  for every possible reason.  I love cooking, eating out, tasting new recipes, cooking family recipes…let’s facing…I am a foodaholic!! I have struggled over the years with eating right, working out and just getting healthy.  I have dieted, exercised and just can’t seem to stick with anything.  Last year I lost 43 lbs. and then stopped losing – no matter what I tried – I gave up…I gained it all back…why can’t I do this?  I am not a failure.  I am sure so many of you feel the same way – it’s yo-yo time!  Up and down with dieting, healthy living and exercise.  Usually we are so committed at first and then somehow we don’t have time, we don’t make time, we let other things come between us and taking care of ourselves – all good reasons we think – but if we are not around long enough – we will not be able to take care of these things.  I learned that it is ok to pray for yourself, to take care of yourself, to make time for exercise – you are not being selfish – you are trying to make sure you are going to be there for others for a much longer time!

So once again, I tried to start about 4 weeks ago and I am eating so much better and I have lost 10 pounds.  I wanted to lose more and I wish it was coming off much faster but this time – I am having fun with it!  I have been craving Fried Chicken – one of my favorite foods.  Well – not exactly a healthy choice but today – I must say – I am very impressed with the best tasting “fried chicken” that I ever made.  I took some chicken breasts and flattened them and rolled them in crushed pistachios and drizzled them with honey and put some olive oil in a baking dish and baked them.  Not only were they beautiful – they tasted amazing!  I have found fabulous recipes and am being creative with our meals.  Why can’t eating healthy be fun?

I am praying and preparing to begin the Daniel Plan (from the Saddleback Church – Rick Warren’s church) for Lent beginning March 5 through April 17.  40 days to a Healthier Life.  Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and Friends – sounds like a winning combination for me.  I hope you will think about joining me in this plan.  I am studying Daniel and looking at videos so that I can be ready when I start.  Pray for me that I can be completely committed during this 40 day period.  Let me know if you need my prayers and if you will join me.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

ImageWe have all heard the saying, “Actions Speaks Louder Than Words”, but what does it really mean?  It means that just because you say something doesn’t mean you understand or mean it.  The way that you act or treat others makes the most substantial impact.  Often when we discuss with our children to do something, like cleaning their room, they say OK and make promises to keep it clean in the future. Well, the next week comes around and there are towels in the floor, candy wrappers laying around, Qtips on the counter…I think you see the picture.  Promises are broken and sometimes, even forgotten they were made.  I know this is typical for most kids, but adults do the same thing. Friends make you promises and then don’t take time to follow through.  Why is that?

In the Bible, Jesus says, “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18NIV

Jesus always backed up his words with his actions….Oh to be like him.  I strive everyday to be kind, generous, make good decisions but it just seems like I fail to often.  Action on our part is required to help out those in need and to demonstrate our love.  Maybe we take chicken noodle soup to a sick friend or we help someone move or we offer ride to church to kids that don’t have a way – these are all actions that speak volumes about who you are. When love is characterized by sacrificial giving of time, prayers, money or otherwise; this is when action really does speak loudly.  Saying the right thing but not doing anything to back it up – is empty, without impact.  You may have really lost someone’s trust when this happens.  So think about what you say, what you promise and make sure you plan to act on it.  Show me…don’t just tell me!

It is always good to provide kind and encouraging words to help a friend or family member; even a stranger. Sometimes all one needs in a time of trouble are the right words of encouragement. So, we, at little expense to ourselves, can just make a habit of simply being nice. That is a good rule of thumb to start putting into practice. Take time to just be nice and go out of your way to make a difference.  Little things are often big things to others!   Seems obvious enough that we should not even have to mention it. When caught up in our everyday busy routines, it becomes easy to turn ourselves off to much of what is going on around us. Which might cause us, for instance, to ignore an elderly person using a walker struggling to get groceries into their car. Who knows, they might also have a hard time driving, perhaps may even live in your neighborhood. All it would take is for us to walk over, help load the groceries and find out. Check in on them often, offer to help!  So much could happen, just because we sometimes decide to act like the God we claim to worship and believe in.Good things always seems to happen to people who do things for others.  They get blessed even more than the people they are blessing.  So I encourage you to go do something for someone today.  It can make a difference!

Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”

In Matthew 21:28-32 ESV

Jesus shares about this very issue in Matthew 21:28-32 ESV version. “What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.

Jesus was saying – we make mistakes – but ask for forgiveness and make things right!  People can change.  Make sure you actions are speaking what you want them to say!

Learning to say NO!!

LEARNING TO SAY NO!

Well if you know me at all – you know that “NO” is not really a part of my vocabulary and I am sure you find it funny that I would dare write on this topic.  I agree – “My name is Leigh Christian, and I have a problem…saying NO!”  I have spent alot of time thinking about why this is such an issue for me and thought I would share my thoughts.  I am NO expert on this topic nor do I always heed my own advice but I am trying to understand and strive to do better.

Reasons that I (and yes – you) have trouble saying no are so numerous, but here are a few:

1.)  You don’t want to let anyone down.  You feel that you need to please them, help them, save them or something like that!  You feel if you don’t do whatever it is – whether it is bring snack, take everyone home, host the event, etc. – no one else will.  YOU and you alone are responsible for everyone’s happiness…

2.)  You don’t want to feel left out!  If you don’t participate and take care of things – you might not get asked the next time.  You sometimes feel that is the only reason people include you – because they know you will drive, you will pay or you will handle all th arrangements. You are scared you may burn bridges if you say “no” now.

3.)You don’t want to be rude!  Sometimes you feel like you would hurt someone’s feelings if you said “no” to them.

4.)  You really want to help!  There are so many great causes and you think you should support them all…from starving homeless kids, cancer research, save the whales…and the list goes on and on and on… It is so inspirational, respectful and just plain ole fun to participate and support worthy causes – just pick a few and commit to them.  You can’t be all things to all organizations and causes.

5.)  You are afraid of conflict – you may make someone mad if you said “no” to them so you avoid saying it.  We all like to avoid conflict so we just do something because it is “easier”??  Really?  Just woman-up and say “NO”.

6.)  You fear that something exciting, award winning, the best moment of your life may happen if you participate so it is hard to say “no” just thinking that your lifelong dream might be achieved!

7.)  You want to be the one to prove that something can be done – you can raise the money, you can make things easier, you can inspire others…

Well – I have thought all those things so often.  I really don’t like to say “no” but I have learned that life does go on if I don’t kill myself to get something done, friends still are there if they are true friends, and if I don’t take care of myself then i won’t be around to say “yes” or “no” in the future.

So how can you (Yes and me) say “No” without feeling horrible.

1.  Say that you need to “prayerfully consider” before accepting the task.  One of my friends said that to me one time and I will never forget it.  I wasn’t mad – I respected her for saying that. Most of the time,  I jump into things head on sometimes and don’t even realize what else I may have on my plate. Often I have committed to too much and reach burn out!  Prayer is always the answer!

John 5:30  The Voice (VOICE)

30 I have not ever acted, and will not in the future act, on My own. I listen to the directions of the One who sent Me and act on these divine instructions. For this reason, My judgment is always fair and never self-serving. I’m committed to pursuing God’s agenda and not My own.

2.  Say “no’ politely, just be honest…say that right now is not a great time because of other commitments but to check with you again.

3.  Suggest someone else that may just be looking for an opportunity to serve.  When you always step up – you are sometimes keeping someone else from receiving the blessing that they may have received.

4.  Offer support, mentoring, suggestions, assistance but ensure that you don’t take on a role or commitment.  You can still show interest in the project, task or person…just don’t take it own for yourself.

5.  Sometimes you just have to say “no”…for no other reason except you don’t want to do something, don’t have time, don’t believe in the cause or you are too tired.  Don’t beat yourself up!  It is ok – life will continue.

So I will pray for you as you please pray for me.  Saying no is hard, but necessary to our own well-being.
