I have ALWAYS loved Martha in the Bible! She often gets a bad wrap but I am here to tell you that I really admire her. She was one of Jesus’ best friends. She got to really serve him in person. Can you imagine cooking for Jesus – wonder what she made? Can you imagine having a home that Jesus came to visit when he needed to rest, to find comfort or be with friends? I found it interesting that Martha could speak so easily to Jesus. She could tell him her mind – like when she was upset with Mary for not helping her and just sitting around. I wish I could be so comfortable with Jesus! Martha was so caught up with making Jesus happy that she didn’t take time to listen to him, to visit with him and to just be with him. Sound familiar – oh yes that sounds like little ole me! I am always busy serving that I don’t stop and listen to Jesus.
In Luke 10:38-42 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
38 While Jesus and his followers were traveling, he went into a town, and a woman named Martha let him stay at her house. 39 She had a sister named Mary. Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to him teach. 40 But her sister Martha was busy doing all the work that had to be done. Martha went in and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are getting worried and upset about too many things. 42 Only one thing is important. Mary has made the right choice, and it will never be taken away from her.”
In John 11 & 12 it shows even further how very special Martha and her brother & sister. John 11:5 states – Jesus Loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. She truly believed that Jesus was Lord and she never doubted him or that he could perform miracles like raise her brother from the dead. Martha was the FIRST one that Jesus gave a hint to in John 11 25-27 that states that he will be resurrected.
John 11 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection. I am life. Everyone who believes in me will have life, even if they die. 26 And everyone who lives and believes in me will never really die. Martha, do you believe this?” 27 Martha answered, “Yes, Lord. I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God. You are the one who was coming to the world.”
I can’t imagine how Martha felt knowing her best friend was perfect and had been taken to be crucified. How would you feel? You know she would have wanted to do something for him – she was just that way….at least serve him a comforting meal or scratch out the eyeballs of those terrible men that was mistreating so horribly her friend.
I feel a connection to Martha and I admire her alot! She does want to serve Jesus and she knows that is her strength. She knows that she does need to take time out sometimes though and just be a good friend. I find myself in that same place – I need to just be a friend to Jesus. Jesus has to remind me too!
Casting Crowns has an awesome song – “Jesus Friend of Sinners” – no matter what – Jesus is always our friend.
Physical – Find a friend to workout with, take a walk, do yoga, do a gym class together.
Mental – Apologize to a friend that you may have hurt or do something nice for your friends
Spiritual – Take time to be friends with Jesus. Pray, listen, spend time with him. Thank him.
Prayers for you as you strengthen your friendships!
Pray for me that I strengthen my friendships
The Power of ONE…it doesn’t seem like ONE person really has the power to make a difference but I know it is true. I have experienced so many things that just ONE thing changed the course of my world, or ONE person made a difference, or ONE moment withstood time! Be the ONE person to change others lives…maybe through smiling or offering a helping hand or maybe a word of encouragement. There was ONE coach who started ONE cheerleading gym in our community against alot of odds, not many supporters and even many haters. He still did it and it changed our lives. He wanted to ensure there was a place to provide great instruction on tumbling, cheerleading and life! This is a place where skills are improved, friends are made and family is formed. This was a second home for so many, a place where you felt loved and encouraged. You would think only the kids would feel this way but it was everyone – brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents – we all felt part of ONE family. It changed my life forever! ONE person – Phillip Boyett – you did make a difference and we all love you! I think of kids who would not go to college if not for this gym, I think of families who would not have connected, friends that would have not met and lives that would not have been impacted. Because of ONE person – a huge impact was made!
Don’t ever think that you cannot make a difference! You alone can! ONE word, ONE smile, ONE prayer…
Here is a poem that expresses the POWER of ONE! Be the ONE!
The Power Of ONE
One song can spark a moment,
One whisper can wake the dream.
One tree can start a forest,
One bird can herald spring.
One smile begins a friendship,
One moment can make one fall in luv.
One star can guide a ship at sea,
One word can frame the goal
One vote can change a nation,
One sunbeam lights a room
One candle wipes out darkness,
One laugh will conquer gloom.
One step must start each journey.
One word must start each prayer.
One hope will raise our spirits,
One touch can show you care.
One voice can speak with wisdom,
One heart can know what’s true,
One life can make a difference,
You see, it’s up to you!
There was another man who made all the difference in the world to save us – JESUS. ONE man took on all the sins so that God could forgive us. ONE crucifixion, one death – to save the world. The ONE and only begotten son – JESUS!
There is only ONE God. And there is only ONE go-between for God and human beings. He is the man Christ Jesus. He gave himself to pay for the sins of everyone. That was a witness given by God at just the right time. 1 Timothy 2:5-6 NIRV
Physical – Take that ONE trip to the gym, do ONE pushup, run ONE mile, the first ONE is always the hardest ONE but it is for sure a step in the right direction….the POWER of ONE!
Mental – Determine how you can do ONE thing to make an impact – maybe it is tell ONE person about God – possibly they could become a missionary and tell thousands. You are the ONE person that can start the change in others. Be the ONE! The POWER of ONE!
Spiritual – Serve the ONE and only God! Give thanks for his one and only son who dies on the cross for you and me!
Prayers for you as you begin to see the POWER of ONE!
Pray for me that I will be the ONE to make a difference and that I will understand the POWER of ONE!
I love Spring – and I always have! It is great to see the sun shining more and things just seem brighter and people generally a little more cheerful…maybe even a “spring” in their step! I love having more daylight when I get off work and it gives me more energy because it just seems like there is more day!
I would think that I would have more energy to go to the gym and exercise more however I have had so many crazy busy things going on….can you relate? Spring Break is next week, deadlines at work and you have to stay on your game with all the sequestration stuff and economy issues. Also, it is the time of year to do taxes, get organized, do spring cleaning….(Cough…cough…well you are supposed to anyway! HAHA) There is just so much to do and so little time! Wait – I just said I felt like I had more time because of the time change….sigh….so which is it? You know – I have found that I have time for things I make time for. My work keeps me busy and I need my job so I have to make time for that. I love church and being active and my spiritual side needs that. I need to take care of myself so that I can do all the other things that needs to be done….hmmm…so very little time for that. Why is that? Why do we not keep the appointments for ourselves to exercise, buy the right kind of groceries, or even visit the doctor when we find time for everything else? With Spring here – I want to make some changes that will help me to spring forward…literally. I started with all my changes recently and I have made so much progress…but somewhere along the way…I have drifted. I write about this alot. I think I am like the dog in the movie “Up”. I see a “squirrel” all the time and get distracted. Why does something new and shiny always get our attention and we get “bored” with normal everyday events? Its a new season and it is time for us to get off our couches and get moving….I will do it and I hope you will too! So next blog – I will update you and hopefully I will spring into action with a new energy. I have to keep going…I think I can…I think I can…
11 Look! The winter is past.
The rains are over and gone.
12 Flowers are appearing on the earth.
The season for singing has come.
The cooing of doves
is heard in our land.
Spiritual – Ask someone to pray with you and for you as you change. Don’t try to do this alone!
Prayers for you as you spring into action and make some changes!
Pray for me that I will spring up off the couch/bed and get busy! Pray that I feel healthier and have more energy.
So people say that I am really lucky and I guess I agree with them! Sure I have had bad luck, bad health, and I have been hurt, stressed and depressed, but I still seem to have good luck! I have always thought you make your own luck. Being lucky is being at the right place at the right time. So I believe in a way – you create your own circumstances. It does seem like successful people have more luck however they work for it. Lucky means – have good luck or fortunate; lucky stresses the agency of chance in bringing about a favorable result . I think LUCK is something that you create for yourself. You make your own luck.Thomas Jefferson even said that the harder he works – the luckier he is….see below.
― Thomas Jefferson
“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.”
― Mother Teresa
Today is St. Patrick’s Day and we all think green, luck, Irish food and fun…I also thought about how lucky I really am. I have a great family, an amazing God and love my job, my home, my friends. Whether it is luck, or not….I am blessed. God provides such wonderful blessings to us and we need to appreciate him. God is Gracious….we discussed this today at Moving on Up – our children’s’ church ministry. I struggled with the lesson today because in Matthew 20:1-16 Jesus taught the parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard. Jesus showed how God treats everyone fairly (even though it is hard to understand.) I encourage you to read this chapter today! Would love to know your thoughts and if you thought it was fair.
Physical –Go to the gym and work out every day. (At least do sit ups, pushups and burpees at home if you can’t make it in.) You make time for things that are important – so make time for your own health!
Mental – Clear your mind, take a hot relaxing bath. Meditate
Spiritual – Read the Bible…read chapters every day…
Prayers for you as you make your own luck. Be at the right place at the right time!
Pray for me that I appreciate the luck that I have and that it continues! Pray that I feel healthier and have more energy.
So what is a Habit after all? According to Dictionary.com – Habit is an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary. I was thinking about some habits that I have – some are good but some not so good! A habit is something you do without even thinking about it!. I have a habit of drinking at least 4 16 oz. bottles of water a day. It took a while but I made sure that I drank one before I got to work every day and just try to drink one everyday at the same time. I continued to do it daily and now I miss it if I don’t have it!.
I had a bad habit of being on facebook or my computer every night before I went to sleep. It seemed to comfort me because I just got lost in other people’s lives. I decided for Lent to give up using my computer in my bedroom so therefore I am working on not doing this. It has been hard and I have struggled because I was so used to it. I want to stay in touch with everyone but I am still checking it – just not in bedroom or right before bed. I have wanted to cheat and actually made excuses a couple of times and said it was for project or work..but we know – I checked my facebook while I was doing the other stuff. I need prayers for strength to stick to my commitment. I wish I could say I was as strong as Jesus was when the devil tempted him…I am not but am going to try harder.
So I encourage you to think about what is a habit for you. Do you have good habits or do you need to get rid of some habits that are not so good? Have you ever noticed that if you miss church once on Sunday that it is so easy to miss the next week and continue until you rarely go? Sometimes we don’t even realize things like that. We just know something is missing! If you get into the habit of going to the gym to work out every day – it is easy to find time to go however if you get out of going regular – it is so easy to find hundreds of reasons why you are not!
Sometimes people can be influencers of your habits. Do you have that one friend that you might drink, smoke or even curse around and then their are the ones that you would never even let them know you had thought about such things. Surround yourself with good people and it makes you look good but it makes you stay good! 1 Corinthians 15:33 Don’t be fooled: “Bad friends will ruin good habits.” ETRV Your friends can also talk you out of doing things or sidetrack your progress. Make sure you let people know that you are doing something like dieting or exercising or attending church more and make it known that is your priority. Get them to support you or encourage and even hold you accountable.
Physical – Help me make a habit to do ab crunches, pushups and cardio daily.
Mental – Help me get in the habit to rest my mind daily. I try to do too much.
Spiritual – Help me stay in the habit to pray and read my Bible daily.
Prayers for you work on your good habits and break those bad ones.
Pray for me that I make good habits and destroy bad habits in my spiritual, physical and mental life!
